SXSW 2010 Film Festival Awards Announced! Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture! Guy Maddin’s Night Mayor! [Film Festivals]

By Ryan Gallagher On March 16, 2010 At 9:43 pm ·

For all of you following me on Facebook and Twitter, you know that my week here in Austin has been a whirlwind of film watching, panel going, and meeting those titans of industry, known as the film writers of the internet. Rest assured that there will be a small flood of reviews going up over the course of the next few days: everything from Kick Ass, to Tiny Furniture, to a super secret screening of Centurion.

Tonight in Austin, the SXSW 2010 Awards were given out to those films that wowed both the Audiences and the Judges. I am especially pleased that Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture won the Narrative Feature award, as it truly was one of my favorites of the festival. I’ll have my review up within the next few days. I’m sure it will be picked up for distribution, if it hasn’t been already. It featured some of the most inspired camera work, art direction, and dialogue that I saw this past week.

Also, congratulations are in order for Criterion Alum, Guy Maddin, for winning the Experimental Short category, with Night Mayor.

Below you’ll find all of the winners of the awards given out tonight. As I post my reviews, I’ll be sure to edit this post, linking to them.

I cannot begin to tell you what an amazing experience this festival was. For those long time listeners/readers, this festival featured all of the aspects that we talk about week in and week out (although surprisingly, no Ninja Turtles).

For the 2010 SXSW Film Festival, 134 feature-length films, including 64 world premieres, were selected from a record 1,572 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,206 U.S. and 366 international feature-length films. 130 shorts were selected from 2,312 short film submissions. In its inaugural year, the Title Design Competition included 18 finalists selected from 101 submissions. The 2010 SXSW Film Festival Awards were hosted by Ovation TV.
