Amazon Unveils Pre-Order Pages For Thin Red Line, Darjeeling Limited, Antichrist, Seven Samurai, and Videodrome Criterion Blu-rays

By Rudie Obias On May 5, 2010 At 6:54 pm ·

Earlier this week, we told you about how The New York Times unveiled a couple release dates before Criterion had the opportunity to announce the titles officially. This August we’ll see a collection of Josef von Sternberg films, as well as the highly anticipated, and much teased at, Hausu.

Not to be outdone, Amazon added several previously un-announced (but again, long rumored) Criterion Titles, which Blu-ray.com picked up on, and the resourceful folks at The Playlist confirmed directly.

Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” will join the other works of Anderson in the collection. It seems like everyone of his films are accounted for. Will it only be a matter of time before “Fantastic Mr. Fox” becomes a spine number in the collection?

As we speculated before, Terrence Malik’s “The Thin Red Line” will receive the treatment from the Criterion Collection. We mentions the various clues surrounding this release. An image capture from the Criterion screening room and a clever drawing of a red lion in a newsletter hinted towards this title.

One of the very first “Travis Predicts” will be put to rest. Lars Von Trier’s controversial “Anti-Christ” will join the collection. A cryptic drawing of a fox with his guts oozing from his body hinted this much anticipated title. Let Chaos Reign!

Also Criterion is planning to re-release two old favorites on the Blu-ray format. Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai” and David Cronenberg’s “Videodrome” will get updates and new transfers.

There is no word on bonus features, release dates or cover art for these releases. It’s only a matter time before Criterion officially announces these title with the aforementioned details. We will definitely keep you posted on these and other Criterion new Releases as information makes itself available.

What do you think of the new titles? Are you as excited as I am for Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited” to join the collection?

You can also add Stanley Donen's “Charade” starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant to that list with a Bluray upgrade. I'm glad I learned about that today, since I was pretty close to buying a copy of it soon. Now I'll wait for the improved version to come out later this year.

Is there a leak over at Criterion this month? Along with the recent NY Times blab, it's kind of unusual that Amazon are taking pre-orders for unconfirmed Criterion releases.

In any case, I'm very excited for “Seven Samauri” and “Antichrist” blu-rays.
