After its premiere earlier this week at the Cannes Film Festival, we now have our first glimpse as to what to expect from Olivier Assayas’ latest film, the five and a half hour long, three part epic, Carlos.
The film stars Edgar Ramirez, as the revolutionary and terrorist known as Carlos “The Jackal.” His real name was Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, and according to reviews out of the festival, that is just one of the multiple details that are in this reportedly dense, but masterful, biopic.
Coming out of the festival, very few films have caught my eye, but this is most definitely one of them. After seeing Assayas’ last outing, Summer Hours (which according to IMDb, he is still attached to an English remake of), I can’t help but crave more from this filmmaker. It has been drawing comparisons to films like Steven Soderbergh’s Che, which is a film that I quite deeply adore.
The film has recently premiered on French television, and will be brought to the states via a teaming up of The Sundance Channel and IFC, who will split distribution of the film, with Sundance throwing the three part film on their television channel, while IFC will be bringing the film to theaters.
Also, while no DVD release is set for the film, this seems right up Criterion’s alley. I know that whenever a film is nabbed up by IFC we all begin to question it’s likeliness of joining the collection, but this seems right down their lane. The film is an epic, biopic, a Cannes hit, and from a director already in the collection, so it seems likely, no? What do you think?
