With Cannes now nearly a month in the past, distributors are still trying to pick their way through this year’s lineup.
According to THR, the US is set to get a few of these rather hyped Cannes releases. The outlet is reporting that Strand Releasing has picked up the US rights to Michael Rowe’s Leap Year, which won the festival’s Camera d’Or award, and Film Movement and Soda Pictures have nabbed up the rights to Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s A Screaming Man. A Screaming Man won the festival’s Jury Prize, and will release stateside via Film Movement, with Soda doing the film’s UK distribution.
Leap Year follows a woman who “embarks on a sado-masochistic affair” which while sounding like the most lighthearted of films (sarcasm) does sound like a really interesting project. Knowing that it won the Camera d’Or only makes me more interested. The film will release early next year.
Screaming Man follows a swimming champ who gives his job up to his son, all while the country, Chad, is amidst a civil war. A release date hasn’t been set yet, but will follow a theatrical run with a VOD run as well. Personally, this sounds like the more interesting release, but really, both of these films sound really interesting, and I can’t wait to check them both out.
