Whit Stillman To Shoot New Film In October, According To Greta Gerwig

After giving us a pair of fantastic (albeit polarizing) films, the Criterion Collection releases The Last Days Of Disco and Metropolitan, along with his other film, Barcelona, Whit Stillman hasn’t given us a new piece of cinema since 1998’s Last Days of Disco.

Well, according to WWD (via Hollywood Elsewhere), that is all going to change, and much sooner than we all had thought.

The outlet recently chatted to actress Greta Gerwig while at Fashion Week, and apparently she will begin shooting Stillman’s next film, Damsels In Distress, in just two weeks.

Gerwig herself will play a ‘girl named Violet who runs a suicide-prevention center at a liberal arts college.   She prevents suicides through the powers of 1930s song-and-dance numbers. So it’s a very dark comedy.’ Count me in.   Can I just buy my ticket right now?

Stillman is a personal favorite of mine, particularly Metropolitan, which is a film that I think people have either skipped over in the rush of early ‘˜90s American independent cinema, or have seemingly misunderstood.   He is a fantastic filmmaker, and an even better writer, and while he may not be the most skilled or flashy behind the camera, his films do have their own distinct style, which I can more than appreciate.   The concept seems right up his alley, and the idea of using musical numbers in the way the film seems to use them, has this film sitting right at the top of my most anticipated coming down the pipeline.

What about you?
