There’s no greater satisfaction than receiving exactly what is expected. When Netflix sends me an email with the subject line “For Tue: Beastmaster,” I can rest assured that my mailman has a red envelope for me Tuesday at 11am. When I order the four-piece Chicken Supreme Dinner from Bojangles and I open the box…why, there are four pieces of said chicken supremacy!
Criterion makes us think. Rather than providing us with campy comedies and mindless, explosion-laden action flicks (well, save one or two), they provide us with intellectually-gratifying cinema coupled with essays, theses, and commentary from scholarly folk of all shapes and sizes. They give credit to their audience’s brain power, and would never sleight us the consideration.  Well, this is embarrassing. It seems that when I typed up my prediction for March 23rd releases, I accidentally typed “Rashomon 35mm print with Sidney Lumet supplement” instead of “Yojimbo and Sanjuro on Blu-ray.” It was a typo, and I apologize if I filled anyone with false hopes.
Anyway, let’s not dwell on the mistakes that I may or may not have made. There are more important matters at hand. It’s the fifteenth, which means it’s time once to journey with me into the future. TO THREE MONTHS FROM NOW!
Friday the 13th. Historically a day of rotten luck, yes? Not this time! Rather than being chased through a lakeside camp by a masked murderer, we’ve been treated to the Criterion Collection’s February 2010 releases.
Today, Criterion announced their January 2010 DVD/Blu-Ray releases. Among them was the anticipated 2-part Steven Soderbergh epic: Che. Along with the release dates and prices, they premiered the cover art for the discs.
Do you live for the 15th of the month? I certainly do. In fact, I typically roll out of bed and into the computer chair, whereupon I spend the day refreshing the “Coming Soon” page of criterion.com some thousands of times until I am rewarded with a prize. You may find this a bit…excessive…but on days like today, you really must pardon my squee-ing. Criterion announces five January 2010 releases over six spine numbers (including their 500th — congratulations!). I’ll give a brief (editorialized) overview: |
