With the Cannes Film Festival coming to a close this past weekend, Ryan took some time to chat with the Editor In Chief of Film.com, Laremy Legel.
They discuss the logistics of covering the film festival as a member of the press, and how it compares to other festivals. Laremy picks some of his favorite films that he saw, and warns you against those that need to be avoided should they get distribution.
Laremy currently writes for Film.com, Rope of Silicon, Hollywood.com, and you can follow him on Twitter.

Greetings CriterionCast listeners! Hopefully you were all following my adventures in Austin via Twitter and Facebook over the past week, to read all about which movies I loved, how late the buses were running, and how often I had to recharge my iPhone from all of the tweeting.
On Saturday, Day 2 of SXSW, Rudie and I hopped on Skype while I was hanging out in a hallway in the Convention Center to chat about my experiences so far at SXSW. The audio quality is certainly not very good, and we are not very structured in our discussion. We also spoil the hell out of Kick Ass (both the Comics and the Movie), but not until the end of the podcast, so if you’re interested in staying unspoiled until the movie comes out, you may want to skip that part.
Overall, I had an incredible experience at SXSW this year. It was an incredible chance to meet people from every aspect of the filmmaking business, from production to distribution to criticism. You can find all of my reviews for SXSW here. So far, I’ve written up my screenings of Kick Ass, Predators (First Look), and Micmacs. Look forward to write ups for: Tiny Furniture, Centurion, Cherry, Vital Signs, People vs. George Lucas, Earthling, The Passion of Joan of Arc with the live score, as well as all of the panels that I attended. I video recorded some of the Q&A’s with the directors after the screenings, and I’ll try to get those uploaded ASAP.
Again, thank you all for your support as we attempt to grow as a film blog and podcast, we would not be doing any of this if it weren’t for you, the listeners and readers of our little endeavor here at CriterionCast.com.</itunes:summary>

Well everyone, it looks like Travis and Rudie have survived most of their first real day of Sundance film screenings. In their second minidisc episode, they discuss Adam Green’s Frozen, Sam Taylor Wood’s Nowhere Boy, Restrepo, and Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void.
They also talk a bit about the actual experience of attending the festival as a member of the press, which I personally love.
As of this post, they’re heading off to more screenings, and should be recording another of these mini podcasts tonight, to keep the films fresh in their head. Look for some more in depth reviews soon!

Frozen is a 2010 film directed by Adam Green and stars Emma Bell, Kevin Zegers and Shawn Ashmore.
A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for two snowboarders and a skier when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that they have been left behind dangling high off the ground with no way down.
With the resort closed until the following weekend and frostbite and hypothermia already setting in, the trio is forced to take desperate measures to escape off the mountain before they freeze to death. Once they make their move, they discover with horror that they have much more to fear than just the frigid cold. As they combat unexpected obstacles, they start to question if their will to survive is strong enough to overcome the worst ways to die.

Nowhere Boy is a film about John Lennon’s childhood and adolescence and the feature film directorial debut of director Sam Taylor-Wood.
The film, which is based on the book Imagine This: Growing Up With My Brother John Lennon by Lennon’s half sister Julia Baird, is about Lennon’s teenage years and his first steps to stardom and focuses on the influence his Aunt Mimi and his mother Julia had on his early life, and his friendship with future fellow Beatle Paul McCartney. British actor Aaron Johnson plays Lennon and Thomas Sangster plays Paul McCartney. Kristin Scott Thomas plays Lennon’s aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff plays Lennon’s mother Julia. The screenplay is written by Matt Greenhalgh. Filming started on location in Liverpool and at Ealing Studios in West London on 8 March 2009.

Restrepo

In 2008 Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm) and Tim Hetherington dug in with the men of Second Platoon for a year. Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, a stronghold of al Qaeda and the Taliban, has proven to be one of the U.S. Army’s deadliest challenges. It is here that the platoon lost their comrade, PFC Juan Restrepo, and erected an outpost in his honor. Up close and personal, Junger and Hetherington gain extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of backbreaking labor and deadly firefights that are a way of life at Outpost Restrepo.
Ever wonder what it’s really like to be in the trenches of war? Look no further. Restrepo may be one of the most experiential and visceral war films you’ll ever see. With unprecedented access, the filmmakers reveal the humor and camaraderie of men who come under daily fire, never knowing which of them won’t make it home.

Enter the Void (French: Soudain le vide) is an upcoming French drama film directed by Gaspar Noé. The film competed in the main competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. Thomas Bangalter, who is best known as a member of Daft Punk, serves as the sound effects director.

Well folks, they made it. After much talking, and a little planning, Rudie and Travis have arrived in Park City for the Sundance 2010 Film Festival. Since most of the films won’t start screening until tomorrow (Friday the 22nd of January), today mostly involved them meeting the various people in the film blogger community, and getting lost in the snow.
They plan on releasing several of these smaller episodes throughout the course of the weekend, discussing what they’ve seen, what they’ve liked, and what you should be keeping your eyes out for. If you have any suggestions for films you would like to have them watch and report back on, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
