[...] Spring has returned to my part of the world, with longer, warmer days and plenty of other reasons to enjoy one of the most pleasant times of the year. I’ll be sure to get my share of all that, but on the movie watching front, I’m in a season of stark somberness these days. Last week, I contemplated the suppressed yearnings of a priest and a parishioner who each thwarted their desires for each other through the discipline of religious observance in Leon Morin, Priest. Looking ahead, I have an appointment on Fårö Island with Ingmar Bergman and company as together we will be looking Through a Glass Darkly at a young woman’s descent into schizophrenic madness in which she experiences God speaking to her though the intermediary of a loathsome spider. Cheerful stuff, hey? Since I knew I was in for a stretch of deeper cinematic ruminations with heavy theological overtones, I figured it’s a suitable occasion for me to revisit Eclipse Series 14: Rossellini’s History Films – Renaissance and Enlightenment and grapple with Blaise Pascal, the last of the three titles included in that box that I’ll review for this column. (Here are links to my previous reviews of Cartesius and The Age of the Medici.) [...]

Probably the most uninformed account of a movie I have ever heard. Did you do no reading or background research beyond the scandalising reviews that the film received in the latter part of the C20th? Do you know anything about Vienna in 1957, or what the director has written about that herself? Do you not think it worthwhile to mention the huge importance of its place as a movie within a trilogy on Germany and thus the wider context? Do you know the level of research that went in to the backgrounding of the characters and historical accuracy? You refer to moral responsibility, and tone, but the film obviously expects of the audience a rudimentary grasp of the political situation in Europe during the mid-1970s. Sorry, but there is just so much you overlook here, it is cringe-worthy in the level of superficiality you chose for discussion of the movie. You also fail to mention the flaws in the Criterion edition and the foul-up with their digital transfer, and their colour correction which undermines the allegorical symbolism of many scenes (some of which harken back to symbology deployed by Hitchcock and other Eastman film stock directors). Additionally there are the problems of serious historical errors in the subtitles of the criterion edition (some of which are important in pointing up key historical facts to the audience). This is embarrassing to listen to. Your grasp of C20th European culture is seriously lacking here too but it is crucial in understanding the film. Additionally you overlook the reception of the film in the USA which differed from European countries die to Joe Levine's chosen modes of promotion in the USA. This is basic stuff that you leave out. And yes... there are several text books on Nazi-exploitation movies (nazisploitation) that you refer to and some of them easily accessible to high school level critics. In fact, you have Internet access. Why did you not do some preparatory reading prior to opening your mouths on thus one?

This was the first film I ever saw, my parents took me to see it at the Corporals Club in RAF Seletar, Singapore in 1963. Being bthe first film I had ever seen left an indelible imprint in my mind together with the second film I ever saw "Zulu". I have watched both of these films time and time again and long for the final release of LOA on Blu Ray to be treasured and watched in in all its glory.

I agree, this will be nice to have in the best possible home theater format, but LoA really demands the biggest projected canvas available, and I hope they take it on the road later this year. I know that the aspect ratios are different, but I wonder if an IMAX projection could be arranged?

Have to agree with what you all said about Submarine; it is kind of a hit and miss depending on your tastes. I love Ayoade but this just didn't hit me were telling me it would.

As far as popcorn fun I was super impressed with First Class and how well Vaughn still delivered a solid effort despite Fox's rushed schedule (and I didn't mind the liberties they took with the source material).Rango, Attack the Block and Rise of the Planet of the Apes were hugely impressive and really surprised the hell out of me. Glad to see them get such praise here. Drive and 13 Assassins were my favorites (even though 13 was actually a 2010 release. Great lists fellas. Here's my 2011 list in case you're curious: http://www.goseetalk.com/2011/12/30/g-s-ts-year-in-review-2011/

Come on -- Black Dahlia wasn't that bad. Some of the performances didn't work, but it was pretty tight formally. And Redacted was essentially a quickie made-for-tv movie that De Palma used as a chance to experiment with digital filmmaking technology.

Thanks James,
as a Belgian loving the US, I am very happy with the time and effort you spent on one of our films!
Michael Roskam also visited Vancouver and here is a short clip of what he had to say: http://youtu.be/5cd7lP6J4kA .

I also add an interesting statement about Bullhead by a Flemish film professor, specializing in cult cinema, in Canada: http://youtu.be/JGS4tN-iwb8 .

Hope you enjoy the clips. Have a great evening,

A Flemish fan!

Crap you're right! At some point in the process I did realize it was a double n, but I forgot to find & replace the wrong version in my notes!

Thanks!

Shame you didn't get the title right. It is called "The Tales of Hoffmann" with a double n at the end of Hoffmann :)
But that's a common error

There was a last segment with Nicklaus revealed as the muse, but that was cut. We're still looking for it.

Yes this project is perfect. A quirky film for a quirky actor. Namely being Joaquin Phoenix. Overall a great combination of directing, producing, writing and acting talent.

Again, I don't think he was brilliant, but I found there to be a slight little spark between Carano and Tatum, adding some sort of realism to their relationship, despite not really knowing all that much about their history. To each there own though. Trust me, I'm in the minority here ;)

I didn't think he was solid at all in Haywire. Either way, Soderbergh can and should be working with actors that are a lot more than just solid. Unless he's making another Bubble, in which case a more amateurish quality in the acting enhances the narrative. In my opinion, Tatum brings nothing to his roles and nothing to Soderbergh's films.

As much as I love my Netflix, I would welcome more competition. That will only make things better for everyone, and there's the remote possibility that someone will come up with something better. We don't need a cable TV world where most people only have one choice, two if they're lucky. Streaming is the future of media, and I dream of the day when every movie ever made is available to everyone at anytime at the click of a button. Then the only problem will be what the hell to watch, a problem I'm already dealing with.

Agreed. I am of the thinking however, that if a company were to be a "Netflix killer," Amazon would be it. Not only is the price point cheaper, but with the free shipping on orders for subscribers, Amazon's deal is really great. Just need more content, and more availability.

No offense, but you're young and your comparing in importance the pretentious, semi-literate Lena Dunham with Ernst Lubitsch is beyond ludicrous (despite your keener excitement at the prospect of seeing "The Oyster Princess). Keep your sense of proportion.

You can read a pretty good description of the Coppola/Brownlow dispute here:
http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=5&nav=messages&webtag=ml-tigers&tid=49197

Irrespective of the merits of Coppola's claims, I doubt that Criterion would want face even the threat of a legal challenge from him or risk pissing off an icon of American cinema. Or, perhaps the SF screening is the beginning of a thawing in relations between Coppola and Brownlow.

Either way, the longer Brownlow restoration has aired on the BBC, and recordings of the broadcast are floating around the internets and can be found without too much trouble.

That's a fine collection of directors and their films. I'm not as critical of The Artist as you are, Josh. For me, it was one of the outstanding achievements of the year. But I also like what I saw in Hugo, Dragon Tattoo, Tinker/Tailor, and Tree of Life. I loved Lubezki's work in this unusual and challenging film. I loved the movie. Just recalling the 5 nominated directors reminds me just how uniquely talented these people are, and how lucky we are to have their talent in our midst.

[...] The above clip, which begins immediately after the credits have run their course, shows one such impulse at work, as a voluptuous cabaret singer uses her talents to work a tavern full of drunken laborers into a frenzy. It quickly devolves from raunchy flirtation into a rowdy brawl, the potent combination of licking lips, gyrating hips and free-flowing suds proving to be more than the repressed libidos gathered in the room can manage before the lid blows off the place. Makavejev’s ogling handheld camera thrusts us right into the midst of the chaos, before cutting away to introduce us to a few of the other main characters: Barbulovic, the bottle-smashing drunkard who gets hauled away by the cops; Rudinski, an engineer assigned by the government to increase efficiency and install new equipment at the copper mine that sustains the nearby community; and Bosko, the young truck driver escorting Rudinski to the worksite and filling him in on his sexual exploits (hence, the notches carved into his steering wheel.) I also kind of dug the band, which seemed to me something along the lines of a proto-Leningrad Cowboys. [...]

I thought Coppola had tried to block it even being screened at the cinema before. Pleasantly surprised at this and hopefully one day the Brownlow version will get a DVD release.

I saw the Coppola version which I enjoyed, but found a bit rushed (it was sped up in addition to missing footage). I have a ticket for this screening, the most I've ever paid for a film. It's not likely to get a release because 1.) Coppola holds the US rights & prevented the release of the full version in the past so that his own father's score could be used. 2.) the final reel is actually 3 reels shot side by side (ie. widescreen)... the difference in aspect ratio would make a home version difficult.

I also like the idea of all of the cars being a reference to the traffic jam scene in "Nashville", but there's no van with a loudspeaker plugging a local politician in the drawing.

these are my best possible guesses: 1) either or both - Traffic/Trafic (Tati) in blu-ray, 2) Weekend, 3) Shallow Grave, 4) Little Fugitive, Lonesome, or Requiem For A Dream, 5) Blowup, 6) A Night To Remember (blu-ray), 7) Quadrophenia, 8) Eating Raoul, 9) Girl On A Motorcycle, 10) Summer With Monika, 11) Being John Malkovich, 12) Breaking The Waves, 13) Bow, 14) Harold and Maude, 15) Belle De Jour, 16) Repo Man, and 17) Yu Tu Mama Tambi.
there are 18 letters in blue surrounding the film icons. I have listed 20 films here so one needs to be kicked out on The Coney Island pick where I have three. you guess which one. I used all of everyone's input to make this up so thanks. it belongs to us all. my gut says this list has up to a 85% chance of being near correct. its fun just trying. the cars/car hauler films come from: Traffic,Trafic, Weekend, Harold and Maude, Summer With Monika, Repo Man possibles.
I welcome corrections/suggestions. peace and love - futurestar

Interesting that someone mentioned The Sweet Hereafter for the car transport (I actually don't remember a car transport in the movie, though I haven't seen it in years) because the bow reminded me of The Adjuster. Maybe an Atom Egoyan duo?
