One of the films playing at SXSW this year was Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. His latest being a documentary about the life of actor, playwright and performance artist Spalding Gray. This documentary had its world premiere a few months earlier in Park City, Utah. Not at Sundance but rather at Slamdance, the other Park City film festival.

After the screening in Austin, Texas, there was a Q&A with the films producers where they answered questions about their plans for the DVD release and the release of other Gray performances to DVD. “We hope to see a box set come out through the Criterion Collection in 2011, but the deal’s not done yet.” Gary’s widow/producer, Kathie Russo chimed in, “it’s a real shame that not even Swimming To Cambodia is out on DVD, so this is a great opportunity to finally get this stuff out there.”

The set is rumored to include other works like Swimming To Cambodia (Jonathan Demme), Monster In A Box (Nick Broomfield), Gray’s Anatomy (Steven Soderbergh) and And Everything Is Going Fine (Steven Soderbergh).

Both Soderbergh (Schizopolis, Traffic, Che) and Demme (Silence of The Lambs) are already in the Criterion Collection so it’s not out of reach to think a box set is forthcoming. (Especially when producers are in talks with Criterion.)

Spalding Gray committed suicide in 2004 by presumingly jumping off the Staten Island Ferry and drowning in the East River. He went missing on January 10, 2004 and was found dead on March 7, 2004. It is believed that the last movie he watched was Tim Burton’s Big Fish.

In my opinion, when this set will come out, it seems like it will be most likely an Eclipse boxed set. A set of films focusing around a center theme, writer or figure by different filmmakers sounds like an Eclipse set to me. Nevertheless, this still would be a great addition to the Criterion, Janus, Eclipse family and I am looking forward to more news about this release.

For all of you following me on Facebook and Twitter, you know that my week here in Austin has been a whirlwind of film watching, panel going, and meeting those titans of industry, known as the film writers of the internet. Rest assured that there will be a small flood of reviews going up over the course of the next few days: everything from Kick Ass, to Tiny Furniture, to a super secret screening of Centurion.

Tonight in Austin, the SXSW 2010 Awards were given out to those films that wowed both the Audiences and the Judges. I am especially pleased that Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture won the Narrative Feature award, as it truly was one of my favorites of the festival. I’ll have my review up within the next few days. I’m sure it will be picked up for distribution, if it hasn’t been already. It featured some of the most inspired camera work, art direction, and dialogue that I saw this past week.

Also, congratulations are in order for Criterion Alum, Guy Maddin, for winning the Experimental Short category, with Night Mayor.

Below you’ll find all of the winners of the awards given out tonight. As I post my reviews, I’ll be sure to edit this post, linking to them.

I cannot begin to tell you what an amazing experience this festival was. For those long time listeners/readers, this festival featured all of the aspects that we talk about week in and week out (although surprisingly, no Ninja Turtles).

For the 2010 SXSW Film Festival, 134 feature-length films, including 64 world premieres, were selected from a record 1,572 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,206 U.S. and 366 international feature-length films. 130 shorts were selected from 2,312 short film submissions.
Earlier today, Tribeca organizers have announced their lineup for the films not in festival competition. Some of these films are world premieres or have already premiered at other film festivals like Sundance and SXSW. Organizers have created four separate categories for these films. Encounters, Discovery, Cinemania and Spotlight are the sections of interest for non-competition films.

The Encounters section contains films from already established filmmakers. Chuck Workman will be premiering his documentary “Visionaries” and filmmaker Edward Burns is premiering his film, “Nice Guy Johnny” as well.

The Discovery section provides an audience to first time or new filmmakers. There are 17 films in all and highlights new talents like Bryan Goluboff, whose film, “Beware the Gonzo” will be making its world premiere.

The Cinemania section feature flumes that slant towards the eclectic and strange. From outrageous, hyper-real comedies to Hong Kong action violent rampage films, this section is exactly what the name suggests.

“We are proud of how the entire program reflects the scope of filmmaking that is happening in the world today. Cinemania is a great cross-section of genre films. Asia has a strong presence with horror and action, while the Americans and Irish deliver the out-there humor,” said David Kwok, Director of Programming, according to the Tribeca Film Festival press release.

The Spotlight section highlights acting performance from Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba in Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer In Me”. Films starring Robert Duvall, Colin Farrell, Amanda Peet and Rebecca Hall will also be showcased.

The Tribeca short film selection will be announced on March 18th.

Captain Nemo. Humbert Humbert. Brutus. Eduard Seibert. Richard Straker. Phillip Vandamm. All are classic and iconic characters played by none other than one of the great actors of the 20th century, James Mason. But it’s his role as Ed Avery in the film Bigger Than Life that sent shock waves in the film industry, broke down the idealistic nature of the nuclear family and has been highly praised by critics and filmmakers alike for the last 50 years.

Ed Avery is the ideal father, husband and friend. He’s a schoolteacher and also does a few nights a week as a cabbie dispatcher, but he doesn’t tell his wife Lou (Barbara Rush) about the job, instead lying that he has school meetings to go to. She becomes suspicious and after a fight, Ed passes out from severe pain, which he’s been having periodically for the last 6 months. He comes clean about his other job with Lou and this is when the doctor tells him the bad news. Ed has a rare inflammation of his arteries and he probably has about 6 months to a year to live. The only way to possibly survive is a new ‘miracle drug’, the hormone cortisone, which has done wonders in initial tests with other patients. So of course he chooses the drug because he can’t leave his wife and child all alone in the world.

Cortisone does the trick, giving Ed a new lease on life and the pain is the last thing on his mind. But we slowly see the cracks that are starting to become wider and more jagged throughout the film. He starts to take too many pills and starts to say irrational things to his own wife and son. He denounces the school system at a parent/teacher conference, saying that we are all raising ‘mental midgets’ in this world and if he had it his way, we’d go back to the old ways of teaching.

He’s unraveling at the seems, minute by minute, in this present day Jekyll and Hyde story. There’s even a shot of Ed, trying to look like a playboy, Hugh Hefner himself even, and becomes a bit too cocky at his wife, who slams the mirror and it shatters, showing Ed in a multitude of angles and a distorted visage. It’s partly thanks to the directing style of Nicholas Ray (who only a year before this, in 1955, unleashed to the world one James Dean and his iconic role of Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause).

Ultimately he becomes completely Hyde like, his wild mood swings becoming steadily more intense and in one of the more tense scenes ever put to film, has a psychotic episode which threatens the safety of his family, his friend Wally Gibbs (played wonderfully by Walter Matthau) and even himself.

The Criterion Collection is releasing this under-seen gem on DVD and Blu-ray. The Blu-ray has a newly restored high-definition print of the film, where the colors are as vibrant as ever. Bigger Than Life was shot in the always amazing Cinemascope, and its cinematography by Joe MacDonald, is nothing short of perfect.

This film was widely ignored in its theatrical run back in 1956 but now is highly regarded as one of the finest achievements in film from the 1950’s. Think of it as a distant cousin to Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best, showing what problems and obstacles middle class families of suburbia had in that era. It wasn’t always about apple pie on the windowsill in every household.

This year’s Tribeca Film Festival lineup was announced today in New York City. The film festival will showcase 85 feature-length films and 47 short films from 38 countries. 46 of those are world premieres. Most film festivals run an average of 120 feature-length films but this year at Tribeca, they decided to scale down the exhibition and competition.

According to Nancy Schafer, the festival’s executive director who spoke with Daily Variety, “We decided to go smaller. This is New York City, so 120 films was overwhelming. We feel our program reflects harder choices being made. I’m energized by the strong lineup.”

The Tribeca Film Festival was started by Jane Rosenthal, Craig Hatkoff and Robert DeNiro in a response to the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. As a way to celebrate the multi-cultural power and experience of film. And also a way to showcase New York City as a major filmmaking center during the recovery of lower Manhattan.

I’m actually getting really excited for this film festival. I don’t have to travel too far to cover a film fest. I just have to hop on a downtown 6 train. We are still waiting to get word if we got our press credentials. Rest to sure, The CriterionCast will cover the festival for all of our listeners and readers.

The Tribeca Film Festival will run between April 21st to May 2nd 2010.

Once or twice on the podcast we’ve mentioned our love for the incredible artwork that the Criterion Collection provides us with for their DVDs and Blu-rays. On occasion, we’ve also mentioned the posters available via the store on Criterion.com. Two new posters showed up on their website yesterday, and they are both certainly going to be beautiful additions to your home.

First off you can now purchase a poster from the 2009 theatrical run, and cover DVD/Blu-ray cover art, for Max Ophul’s Lola Montes. The painting is from the fashion artist David Downton, whose personal website can be found here (I’d highly recommend going through some of his illustrations of other people, he has an incredible style). This limited edition one sheet, measures 27 inches by 39.5 inches, with a matte finish. The poster is rolled and not available for gift wrap. You can hear some of my thoughts on the film on one of our recent Disc 2 episodes, found here.

Finally, you can now own a 27 inch by 40 inch poster from the 2009 theatrical run, and cover of the re-release DVD, for Federico Fellini’s Amarcord. Featuring artwork from Caitlin Kuhwald (you can find her personal website here), the poster has a glossy finish. Along with the poster, you can buy a print of the entire image, which has been available for some time now. Our podcast episode discussing Amarcord will be broadcast live next month, and available for download a couple of days afterwards. You can always find our schedule of upcoming episodes at CriterionCast.com/schedule.

As Travis has mentioned during our discussions of the poster art available, on our podcast, the one-sheets can be difficult to frame, unless you have it custom framed. I think we can all agree that artwork of this caliber deserve to be well taken care of, no matter the price, rather than thumb-tacking them to a wall.

Are you planning on purchasing either of these? Are there other Criterion covers that you’d like to own high quality posters for? Let us know in the comments below!

That is because Rialto Pictures, purveyors of classic films, are unveiling their new beautiful 35mm print of the classic film “Breathless” at the Film Forum and will then do a national rollout for its 50th anniversary event.

This new restored version was first unveiled at the Berlin Film Festival in February and will next make its impact at the inaugural TCM Classic Film Festival at Hollywood’s Chinese Theater next month, April 22 – 25.

The re-release specialists acquired the U.S. Theatrical rights to the quintessential French New Wave film, which was written by Francois Truffaut and was the directorial debut of Jean-Luc Godard. It starred both Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, making a star of Belmondo and furthering the career of Seberg.

Rialto founder Bruce Goldstein has said, “But ‘Breathless’ is in a class by itself. It’s not only one of the most important films of the last half-century, still inspiring new generations of moviemakers, but it’s just as fun and audacious as it was 50 years ago.”

The “Breathless” restoration is the first ever done for it and was supervised by Beatrice Valbin from StudioCanal. The English subtitles were redone by Lenny Borger, film historian, who is now working on a translation for Godard’s latest film, “Socialisme”.

Rialto also picked up the theatrical rights to two other 1963 Godard films, “Le petit soldat” and “Les Carabiniers.” The deal was made with Paris-based film company Pretty Pictures.
