Ben Wheatley’s Next To Be A Civil War Film

Like any great director, Kill List helmer Ben Wheatley appears to be staying quite busy.

With his most recent film Sightseers set to play TIFF this year, Film4 has announced (via The Playlist) that the director’s next will not only star List lead Michael Smiley, but that it will be entitled A Field In England.

A UK-set Civil War film, the picture will start shooting next month, and will follow ‘a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field.” Smiley will play an alchemist that the group meets, who enlists the group in a journey for hidden gold. Toss in some drugs, and you’ve got a film that sounds way too good to be true.

Writer Amy Jump is back aboard to co-write the script, and with everything coming into place, one would have to imagine that IFC would love to continue their relationship with the director, giving Criterion an outside chance of nabbing the home video release, years down the line. Kill List was a brilliant film, and one that Criterion fans had hoped would hit thanks to the company given their relationship with IFC, and his new one, Sightseers, is no different. It’s gotten rave reviews so far, so here’s to hoping that some of that Wheatley love that IFC has will rub off on the big ‘C.’ He’s a director that truly deserves the love and respect.
