Berlinale 2013 Awards Announced; Winners Include Jafar Panahi And David Gordon Green

Berlinale-framed

With the Oscars now only a week away, awards are coming right and left, and while most are looking at the year that was, there is one festival that just announced its awards for the best of what we all can expect to see going forward.

This year’s Berlinale concluded with the reveal of its award announcement, and in that there are a cavalcade of intriguing projects that just got a lot more buzz.

The big award, the Golden Bear, went to Calin Peter Netzer’s Child’s Pose, with Danis Tanovic’s An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker nabbed the Jury Grand Prix award. Criterion fans will dig the fact that David Gordon Green took home Best Director for Prince Avalanche, and even Jafar Panahi grabbed an award for Best Screenplay for his brand new picture, Closed Curtain.

Acting awards went to Nazif Mujic and Paulina Garcia for An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker and Gloria respectively. Finally, an interesting award to this writer went to Gus Van Sant for his film Promised Land, and while it was just a “Special Mention,” that film deserves to be spoken of more, because last year’s dirty little secret was just how great that film was. No one saw it, and that will hopefully change going forward. Here is the full list of winners:
