Berlinale To Highlight Ingmar Bergman With Film Retrospective

Starting this Thursday, the Berlinale will kick off it’s 61st year of presenting some of the greatest films of the world to their festival attendees.

While we won’t be able to attend this year (it’s a rather expensive trip for us lowly bloggers), we do have a friend attending the festival. Iain Stasukevich of American Cinematographer will be attending the entire festival, and covering the films for the magazine through blogging and podcasting. He and I recently recorded a bonus episode that will be going up soon, talking about the films that he is excited for. We’ll likely record a couple more episodes, talking about the festival at it’s height, and a round up once things have completed.

In addition to celebrating many living filmmakers, the Berlinale will feature an impressive Ingmar Bergman retrospective. Below you’ll find the press release, along with the entire line-up of films that will be screened for the attendees. In addition to many feature films from Bergman, there will also be shorter pieces of footage of the director on Faro Island, documentaries and such.

Ingmar Bergman is one of the most well represented filmmakers in the Criterion Collection, but it is always amazing to see how many films aren’t yet in the Collection.

Will you be attending this years Berlinale? What is your favorite Ingmar Bergman film? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Berlinale 2011: Ingmar Bergman Retrospective and Homage for Armin Mueller-Stahl

The Retrospective of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival will honour Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, who died in 2007. The cinematic oeuvre of this legendary filmmaker includes more than 60 works. (See press release from October 8, 2010.)

The Retrospective will present some of Bergman’s films for the screen as well as a sample of his works as a screenwriter. In addition it will show the documentaries made by Swedish filmmaker and Bergman-connoisseur Stig Björkman, who portrayed Bergman both in front of and behind the camera. Thanks to the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Institute, the prints screening in the Retrospective are virtually new. A further thank you goes to the right holders AB Svensk Filmindustri for their kind support. To supplement the film programme, there will also be a series of events with lectures and discussion panels.
