Burden Of Dreams Director Les Blank Dead At 77

lesblankframed

Beloved documentarian Les Blank, best known for his look at the making of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo, a documentary entitled Burden Of Dreams, has died. He was 77.

The director passed away on Sunday, and his relationship with Herzog may be one of the more intriguing cinematic relationships in memory. Both Burden and his Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe pictures are superb, and Burden is of particular note.

One of the best films about filmmaking ever crafted, Burden of Dreams is Blank’s true masterpiece, and is as great, if not more so, than the film it is documenting. I’m not super familiar with much of the rest of the director’s filmography, but it’s definitely a collection of films I’d love to dig into more and more. His films are seemingly a bit tougher to find, but hopefully with his passing, his canon can get a second life. One can only hope. He will be missed.
