D.A. Pennebaker To Receive Honorary Oscar

It’s about damn time.

In a long-awaited and even more deserved move, it has been announced that none other than War Room co-director (along with wife Chris Hegedus) DA Pennebaker will receive an honorary Oscar this year, making him the first documentary filmmaker to receive such an honor.

Along with films like Monterey Pop and the brilliant Don’t Look Back, Pennebaker has become a staple of the documentary film world, proving to be one of its most influential and important faces ever. Credited as one of the true patron saints of the Cinema Verite ideal, his films were, and still very much are, truly one of a kind.

Even more shocking however, is that he’s the very first documentarian to receive the honor. He is   truly one of the greatest documentarians ever, but there are a handful of equally influential documentarians that should garner the award and hopefully will one day.

Now, the awards won’t be shown on TV, but they will be given at a diner in November, with, hopefully, those being honored getting a spot on the big show come Oscar Sunday next year. He joins the likes of Jeffrey Katzenberg, Hal Needham and George Stevens as honorees this year.
