David Harewood To Star As Paul Robeson In Upcoming Biopic

When looking at The Criterion Collection, for all intents and purposes, you are looking at some sort of film school in a box. One of these periods of time, or more so in the case of icon Paul Robeson, seemingly overlooked on screen legends, is about to return to the spotlight, however.

Variety reports that David Harewood, star of Showtime’s Homeland, will star in the upcoming film Robeson for Four Stars Intl.

Criterion hounds will recognize him as the focus of Paul Robeson: Portraits Of The Artist, the four disc box set that includes works like The Emperor Jones and Borderline. An athlete, singer, actor on both stage and screen and an activist, Robeson (son of an escaped slave) became one of the most important and influential men of his generation, only to leave cinema entirely to use his standing to help the civil rights movement grow.

Personally, while I’m not familiar with Harewood’s work, he is a beloved screen and stage actor, and definitely has the presence to fit this role quite well. The film is penned by Richard Akel and Terry Bisson, with director’s being looked at currently.
