Director Apichatpong Weerasethakul To Helm Cemetery Of Kings

joeyframed

If a film like Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is any hint, director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is one of the most oddly intriguing experimenters in all of cinema.

A meditative masterwork, the Palme d’Or winner is about to head back behind the camera for a new film that sounds as interesting as anything out there. Entitled Cemetery Of Kings, the film is set to star oft-Weerasethakul lead Jenjira Widner as a nurse in a town on the Mekong River. Sounding ostensibly like a member of Boonmee’s extended cinematic family, the film will feature “strange dreams, phantoms” and a “mysterious river creature,” making this sound like a film you truly can’t miss.

Never one to avoid touching on pertinent themes, the film will look at his native Thailand and the political landscape of the region, so it sounds like another day at the office for Weerasethakul. As a huge fan of everything I’ve seen from him (I have yet to lay eyes upon his latest film, Mekong Hotel), he’s one of my favorite filmmakers, and this is the exact type of picture that gets me into the theater. Hopefully this one will be ready soon. A return trip to Cannes next year?
