Disney Purchases LucasFilm; New Star Wars Film In 2015

In what can only be described as one of the biggest purchases made since the last time Disney bought a major entertainment organization (that being Marvel), Disney is set to purchase Lucasfilm, with their eyes set directly upon their crowning franchise.

For the price of $4.05 billion (and the story is still breaking, so details may be altered), the studio has acquired Lucasfilm and have also announced that they are fast tracking a new Star Wars film to hit theaters in 2015. Co-chair of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, will remain but become president of the company, and will directly report to Disney chair Alan Horn.

Now, while the headline here is garnering a lot of buzz for the pending film, it should be seen as something far greater. Finally allowing for a new set of hands to get involved with the Star Wars franchise, this could very well be the injection of life that the entire franchise, and also Lucasfilm as a whole, rightly needs. Lucas, full disclosure, will be a “creative consultant” on the new film, Episode 7. More as the story develops.
