Film Society of Lincoln Center to Present Ozu-Inspired Series of Films

ozuframed

Hot off of an amazing and diverse New York Film Festival this year, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced a series today called “Ozu and His Afterlives” that will honor the legacy of famed Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. The series is timed to coincide with the 110th anniversary of his birth, and just so happens to include a handful of films in the Criterion Collection.

The main films in the series will be the U.S. premieres of new restorations of two Ozu color classics – the 1958 comedy Equinox Flower and the director’s last film and sly pseudo-remake of his earlier film Late Spring, 1962’s An Autumn Afternoon.

Along with those films, the series will be rounded out with a group of films by other directors that Film Society’s Director of Cinematheque Programming Dennis Lim said were “in some way made with Ozu in mind.” The other films in this series already in the Criterion Collection include Pedro Costa’s In Vanda’s Room, Aki Kaurismaki’s The Match Factory Girl, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Still Walking, Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise, and Wim WendersTokyo-Ga, the documentary that was included on the Criterion release of Ozu’s own Late Spring.

The two remaining films in the series are Claire Denis35 Shots of Rum and Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Café Lumiere.
