Filmmaker Volker Schlondorff Returning To US With New Film Montauk

It’s a good time to be Volker Schlondorff.

With his iconic film The Tin Drum now available on Criterion Collection Blu-ray, the director is making the rounds for his new film, Calm At Sea, and apparently he’s set his sights back on the US for a new project.

The director has revealed that he is teaming with writer Colm Toibin on a new picture entitled Montauk. An original work, the pair are writing the picture together, both considering the film “100% autobiographical, each one” of them. The picture will follow the story of a writer coming to the states to aid in the opening of his new play, only to get caught in a world of romance similar to the source of his play, Don Juan.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what Schlondorff has to offer here. He’s an immensely interesting filmmaker, and one that I’m not at all that familiar with. I’ve seen a handful of his films (Drum, Young Torless and Coup de Grace), but am relatively ambivalent about his US work.  This premise sounds interesting enough, and with Schlondorff behind the camera this will definitely be one of the bigger art house productions to keep an eye on. I can’t wait for this.
