First Teaser For Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Arrives

While footage had been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, one couldn’t expect to be privy to such a pristinely breathtaking trailer at this stage in the game for director Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, The Master. But I’ll be damned if we didn’t just witness one of the single greatest teaser trailers of recent memory.

More like a short promo reel, the film is structured as a video log of a few moments in the life of our lead character, played by Joaquin Phoenix, as he discusses some ‘episodes’ to what appears to be a psychiatrist. And it’s possibly the greatest trailer in years.

The film hits later this year, but this is not anything we could have expected from the film. It looks visceral and absolutely beautiful, with almost a Kubrickian frame, particularly in the close ups of Phoenix’s uncompromising face. The score is strong, with it mostly being staccato notes with mysterious string cues playing faintly in the background, adding to the overall tense and haunting style. I can’t even comprehend how great this film looks.

What do you think?
