Joaquin Phoenix Re-Teaming With Paul Thomas Anderson For Inherent Vice

Could Paul Thomas Anderson have found a new muse?

While Robert Downey Jr. had been tapped for the lead role in the director’s upcoming adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel Inherent Vice, THR is reporting that’s not the case anymore.

The outlet has revealed that The Master star Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star in the picture, which will be produced by Anderson, Megan Ellison, John Lesher and JoAnne Sellar. Annapurna Pictures is financing the film.

With The Master becoming one of last year’s best feature films, and arguably PTA’s greatest work to date, things are looking up for the auteur, who has become one of today’s most vital voices. I think the idea of him taking on a story about a pot smoking detective with Phoenix in that role is beyond enticing. Their work together on PTA’s last film was thrilling, so hopefully this will only find the director growing even more.
