Netflix Launches Streaming Only Service, Raises Disc Subscription Prices

Well it’s finally here.

After being announced a month or so back, Netflix has launched their streaming only subscription plan, giving users unlimited streaming for only $7.99 a month.   By going to Your Account, you may switch over to this new plan, if you deem it worthy, as of this very moment.

However, before you make your decision, the company has also announced a much different piece of news.

According to their blog, Netflix will be increasing the price of the unlimited disc/streaming plans.   Here is how the new increases break down:

With this increase in price and the lower price related to the streaming only service, this subscription option is now one that is far more viable than previously thought.   While I will more than likely still be sticking with my current subscription, I do have to say, the relative $2 price difference a month between having one disc at a time, and no disc, is quite compelling.

What do you think? Have you switched yet?

  • I have switched! I had to switch DOWN a level, which is irritating. I can’t really take advantage of the streaming very extensively, so this just serves to cost me more money for no real reason. I figure I needed to break my Netflix addiction anyways, so lowering it will just give me more time to .. I dunno… read books or something. :)
