NYFF Names Andrea Arnold as Inaugural Filmmaker in Residence

With just three feature films under her belt, director Andrea Arnold has made herself a singular talent whose films depict sensually drawn and stripped-down tales of heartbreaking realism. Her first two features, Red Road and Fish Tank, both received the Jury Prize award at Cannes, while her early short Wasp won her an Academy Award in 2004. She’s been on the Competition jury for last year’s Cannes Film festival and this year’s Venice Film Festival, and now she’s going to get some seriously amazing help with what comes next.

Arnold was just named the inaugural “Filmmaker in Residence” for the 51st New York Film Festival, which will give Arnold the opportunity to develop and refine new work through participation in master classes, film programs, and be mentored by an advisory board that features Henry Bean, Brady Corbet, Charles Finch, Naomi Foner, Larry Gross, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Danny Huston, Tamara Jenkins, Ed Lachman, Bennett Miller, Matthew Modine, Ed Pressman, Ira Sachs, Paul Schrader, and Marisa Tomei.

In an interview with FilmLinc Daily Arnold said, “I’m very excited. The timing is perfect. I’m just coming to the end of writing something set in America. I know it has another level to go to and the idea of actually being in America while I’m writing was just something that landed right in front of me and felt like the perfect thing.”

The prospect of having a talent like Arnold fostered by the talents associated with the Film Society of Lincoln Center is definitely noteworthy, and I can’t wait to see how this will help embolden her work even further.
