Rome Film Festival Gets New Films From Paul Verhoeven, Mike Figgis And More

Clocking in as 2012’s last major film festival, the Rome Film Festival doesn’t have the hype, buzz or attention that a Venice, Toronto or Telluride, but this year’s festival will definitely have the films to rival any of its brethren.

The festival has revealed a handful of new additions to their lineup, and will include new films from the likes of Paul Verhoeven, Peter Greenaway and even Mike Figgis.

The biggest addition here, at least for arthouse and/or Criterion Collection fans is that Paul Verhoeven is debuting a new hour-ish long picture entitled Steekspel (Tricked). At 52 minutes in length, the film is apparently an exercise for the filmmaker, as it will find him taking suggestions from the public, in what sounds like an odd little experiment. It’ll take suggestions from the public for things like the script, cast and even the title.

Peter Greenaway’s new film, Goltzius and the Pelican Company is debuting here, and will star F. Murray Abraham as the artist Hendrik Goltzius, who would become renowned for his sexualized takes on events out of the Bible. Mike Figgis’ Suspension Of Disbelief will also bow here, as will a new film entitled Tar from actor-turned-director-turned-everything James Franco. Aki Kaurismaki and Pedro Costa even show up as part of a special omnibus film entitled O Batuque Dos Astros, as well as Apichatpong Weerasethakul joining the ranks with a new short, Monsoon. Talk about a lineup. Here is the full list of additions:
