Steven Soderbergh Talks Re-Cutting Kafka And More

soderberghframedvenice

Today, March 30, sees the release of the most recent issue of Empire magazine, and with that, comes one intensely interesting interview.

Deemed an “exit” interview by the magazine, the director talks about a cavalcade of things ranging from his controversial decision to leave feature film directing, all the way to his pending re-cutting of his hard to see picture, Kafka.

With regards to the latter topic, the filmmaker has revealed that he’s currently working on changing “the DNA of the whole film,” with hopes of releasing a dual disc release, featuring both versions of the film. Toss in a new German dub, “probably” a new score, a new edit and possibly even a commentary from none other than Lem Dobbs, this will certainly be a project to keep an eye on. The director has called this new take on the film a “hardcore art movie,” and that the cuts “will be bloody,” so this is something to really be excited for.

I myself have never seen the film, so I can’t directly speak to the film’s quality, but this is definitely something I’m immensely interested in. Soderbergh has always been a favorite director of mine, and while this picture is just about impossible to find, it’s always been one that I’ve eagerly wanted to see. And in what better fashion than the director’s new cut?

We’ll have more from the interview soon, but in the meantime, how about you go buy some of his Bolivian alcohol or esoteric film related t-shirts. Do so at Soderbergh’s new site HERE.
