Trailer For Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters Hits

Everyone in the film world may be focusing on trailers for films like The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, all of which are, in their own right, quite entertaining and intrigue-building.   That said, Wong Kar-Wai has thankfully given the world its first look at his new film, and is making those films look a bit limp.

Vlicious has the first trailer for the film (via The Playlist), and while it’s short on length and light on plot, the trailer is one of the more visually striking pieces of promotional material we’ve seen in quite some time.

The film stars Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, and follows the story of Yip Man, one of the most iconic martial arts masters, even being the man to train Bruce Lee.   The clip itself, as mentioned above, doesn’t have the most dense of narrative, but it does look stunning.   I think the use of slow-motion and the action choreography here are gorgeous, and ultimately, that’s what one should expect from an action biopic from a true auteur like Won Kar-Wai.   And hey, rain always adds to an action set piece, and there is a lot of it here.   The film should play the fall film festival circuit, and will likely hit early next year.
