Lionsgate UK To Release Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method And Fiennes’ Coriolanus

It looks like Lionsgate is set to take quite a step out of their horror/genre loving wheelhouse.

According to Variety, the studio’s U.K. branch has picked up the rights to both David Cronenberg’s upcoming film, A Dangerous Method, as well as the Ralph Fiennes helmed, new age take on the Shakespeare story, Coriolanus. The studio plans on releasing both films in the U.K. sometime next year.

A Dangerous Method sees Cronenberg re-team with his muse, Viggo Mortensen, as well as Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender in supporting roles, all set to shoot this month. The film follows the relationship between legendary psychiatrists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, all during the early days of psychoanalysis. However, it’s also a tale of romance, as it follows Jung, as he falls for a woman named Sabina Spielrein, who herself is far more troubled than she seems, and becomes even more so as the film goes.

Coriolanus is the debut from actor turned filmmaker, Ralph Fiennes, and is a new take on the classic Shakespeare tale, that followed a Roman general who goes against the Empire, and flies in the face of his government. The new take is set during the Iraq war, lensed by famed cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, and stars a cast that includes Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox. You really can’t go wrong with that cast and crew behind a project.
Both of these projects sound immensely interesting, particularly the Cronenberg film. Cronenberg has proven to be one of the world’s most talented filmmakers, with films like Videodrome, A History of Violence, and of course his last effort, Eastern Promises. He’s a talented director, and with Mortensen in front of the camera, you really can’t go wrong. Coriolanus is also an interesting little project, particularly in that this will be Fiennes’ debut behind the camera. We’ve seen a few set photos from the film, and it looks rather good, so hopefully it will live up to its immense potential.
