Gus Van Sant’s Restless Loses Its Release Date

Just two months out from its release, Gus Van Sant’s upcoming film, Restless, is now in search of a release date to call home.

Variety is reporting that Sony has yanked Restless, starring Mia Wasikowska, from its January 28 release date, and this could mean many different things.

My first thought directly after hearing this news is that Sony is doing so to give it the best possible Oscar chances come 2011.   Gus Van Sant is a beloved filmmaker, and he appears to be on the level of something like Milk here, instead of the more fringe, or independent style found in films like Paranoid Park or Last Days.   Van Sant is a filmmaker with a lot of weight amongst those within the film world, so any of his works truly have some weight behind them.

However, without a new release date set, it seems like Sony has no idea what they are exactly going to do with the film.   It could hit come March, but it could be saved until the fall even.   At this point, I’m hoping my gut feeling is correct.   Fingers are crossed.
