Earlier today, io9 got everyone’s hopes up by reporting that Guillermo Del Toro’s At The Mountains Of Madness would begin shooting this June. Then Mike Fleming over at Deadline came along and reported that Guillermo would be heading to Warner Bros to shoot “Pacific Rim” as his next film.
I know how personal this project was for Del Toro, since he has basically been preparing for this for over 15 years. You can head to my interview, to hear him discuss some of his thoughts on the project, and what might have been.
Earlier today, before the Deadline announcement, I e-mailed Del Toro to see if the June shoot date was in fact true, and he didn’t respond until just a few minutes ago, well after we all heard of it’s supposed end. This is what I got in my inbox:
Me: I’m sure everyone is e-mailing you this question today, but is this June start date for Mountains of Madness true? Got your greenlight?
Guillermo: The opposite- Dead. – G
So there you have it. Guillermo is always very careful and short with his e-mails, but this pretty much sums it up.
While I was extremely disappointed to see Del Toro leave the Hobbit last year, the thought of a big budget HP Lovecraft film was almost too good to be true. Hopefully Guillermo will actually begin filming something soon, as I know he has a ton of projects swirling around in his brain.
If you’d like to read some more verbose thoughts on this news, I’d head over to Ain’t It Cool and read Harry’s piece on the matter, and then immediately head to HitFix to read Drew McWeeny’s response.
What do you think of this news? Which of Guillermo Del Toro’s many projects would you like to see him take on next? Now that Cronos is in the Criterion Collection, which of his films would you l like to see get the Criterion treatment next?
