TIFF 2012: First Look At Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha And Malick’s To The Wonder Gets A Bit More Detailed

And the excitement keeps on amping up.

With the first wave of films announced for TIFF 2012, some of the most interesting projects come from two of the most polarizing figures one could ever imagine. First up, Noah Baumbach will be bringing his new film, Frances Ha to the festival, which features Greta Gerwig (who also co-wrote the script with Baumbach), as a dancer who moves to New York City and becomes caught up in a whirlwind of flighty fair-weather friends, diminishing fortunes and career setbacks.

We now have our first look at the film, and it’s a beauty. Shot in black and white, the film will allegedly clock in at 86 minutes, and while no distributor has picked the project up, that will likely not stay that way for much longer. The film appears to get back to Baumbach’s early work, so while some of his recent output has been rather subpar, this could be a great step in the right direction.

And finally, new details have emerged about Terrence Malick’s new film, To The Wonder, with a brand new premise revealed:

After visiting Mont Saint-Michel ‘” once known in France as the Wonder ‘” at the height of their love, Marina (Kurylenko) and Neil (Affleck) come to Oklahoma, where problems soon arise. Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Bardem), who is struggling with his vocation, while Neil renews his ties with a childhood friend, Jane (McAdams). An exploration of love in its many forms.

While not much of a shocker, the idea of getting a new Malick film already here a year after Tree Of Life, makes this one for the ages. He’s one of the film world’s titans, and with a killer cast like the one assembled here, this should heat up Toronto like a summer sun.
