Mike Leigh’s Another Year Distribution Deal Imminent

It looks like we may have our first big sale of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

After receiving rather stunningly positive praise from critics, Mike Leigh’s (director of the Criterion release, Naked) new film, Another Year, is looking to make a splash at the annual film festival. Deadline is reporting that both Sony Pictures Classics and The Weinstein Company are currently in the mix to pick the film up for domestic distribution, and the deal could come rather quickly.

The multi-generational film came into the festival as one of the more anticipated films in competition, and is appearing to be the critics’ choice at this point in the game. However, the festival is far from done. Most distributors are currently waiting with baited breath to see Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s latest film, Biutiful, which stars Javier Bardem. With films like Babel and 21 Grams in Inarritu’s filmography, it’s one that distributors are looking anxiously to pick up.

However, at this stage in the game, Mike Leigh is the name on the tip of everyone’s tongue in Cannes, and Another Year is the reason why. Both SPC and the Weinstein Company are massively successful distributors, and will without a doubt be pushing this film for awards season this year. Expect word on who wins this battle to come very soon.
