Fifty Years Later, Breathless Can Still Fill A Theater

This makes all of the money that went to films like Transformers 2 sit a little better with me.

Coming into this past weekend, films like Sex and the City 2 and Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, were the talk of the theaters, and while they didn’t make quite what box office prognosticator’s previously thought, most filmmakers and studios would kill for their gross.

However, the big news of the box office over the weekend came in the form of legendary French New Wave film, and to me the best film ever made, Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. Showing on four screens, Box Office Mojo is reporting that the film made $32.7 thousand over the weekend.

The film saw a much needed rerelease thanks to its 50th birthday, and proved that not all theater goers are only coming to theaters for 3D and video game films. Personally, Breathless is still as fresh and visceral as the first time I saw it, and is far more interesting and effective than anything that you could go see today. Hopefully the film will not only see it’s long awaited journey to Blu-ray thanks to Criterion, but also a trip to theaters around the U.S., because if this proves anything, there is an audience for legendary and classic cinema in today’s market.
