Maybe it just hasn’t been used in the right way?
With recent rise in 3D feature films, has come the popularity of the cheapest way to get a film to be in 3D, up-conversion. Being used for films like Clash Of The Titans and Alice In Wonderland, 3D up-conversion has become a rather popular, and cost effective, way of turning any sort of feature film, into a 3D piece.
Now, criticisms aside (as people like James Cameron have called out the process for ‘cheapening the medium,’ which this writer agrees with), maybe it just hasn’t found the right film yet?
Well, Terry Gilliam is hoping that that is the case at least.
According to Mr. Tee’s Movie Clicks (via io9), Gilliam recently spoke on a possible 3D conversion for one of his most beloved films, Time Bandits:
We are in discussion to make a 3D version of the film ‘˜Time Bandits.’ That will not change anything in the film itself will remain the same and if I think it serves as some passages in Alice In Wonderland, the 3D should work well. Anyway, I’ll have fun with it!
As will we, Mr. Gilliam.
Personally, while I’ve never been a fan of 3D or its conversion style version, I do think that a Time Bandits 3D film will be a breathtaking piece of cinema. It would most likely be for some sort of 30th anniversary re-release, but no matter the reason behind it, I can’t help but think this would be a perfect way to use the 3D conversion technology. Really, any Terry Gilliam film would be completely perfect for a 3D conversion, so this is music to my ears.
Are there any other classic films that you would like to see get converted into 3D? Any Criterion releases that you’d like to see maybe get converted into 3D?
