So, while we don’t quite know what to expect from his upcoming film, Tree Of Life, The Wrap does have a few details that shine a direct light on Malick’s upcoming film, a yet to be titled romantic drama.
With a cast including Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, and even Barry Pepper, the film is allegedly the smallest and most intimate film that the reclusive auteur will have to his filmography.
Overall, the film will follow a writer, Neil (Affleck), who finds himself in the middle of a marriage completely lacking any sort of romance, with Marina, played by Kurylenko. Marina’s visa is set to expire, leaving Neil in the position of being forced to propose. The duo have a daughter, played by Tatiana Chilin, but both are having extramarital affairs, with those involved being played McAdams and Charles Baker respectively.
Bardem comes in as Father Quitana, whom both Neil and Marina come to find guidance from. Rachel Weisz will play Dinah, a friend of Neil’s, with Romina Mondello rounding out the cast as Anna, a woman who is married, but also having an affair. I’m presuming that her husband will be played by Pepper. No details have solidified what his role will exactly be however.
Personally, I love this premise, and I love knowing that Malick, a filmmaker who loves to make the occasional epic (name a film in his canon that doesn’t have a scope that is relatively more grand than most), is going to make a seemingly intimate relationship drama. This sounds like it could be yet another masterpiece from a filmmaker who seems to be unable to make anything less than just that.
It’s also been confirmed that an early trailer for The Tree Of Life will be playing this weekend in front of Darren Aronofsky’s The Black Swan. Hopefully the trailer will make it online early next week, for those that won’t be able to see the Black Swan this weekend.
