As 2012 marks the studio’s impressive 100 year anniversary, Universal has revealed plans for one of their bigger undertakings in years, and one that should make any fan of the studio’s storied history beyond excited.
The studio will be debuting new restorations of 13 films from their library, and will be releasing a handful of them to Blu-ray. Now, we have only seen four of these films confirmed at this point to see the upgrade on home video, but for all intents and purposes, it would be silly of Universal to not capitalize on some of these releases. Here’s the list:
- All Quiet on the Western Front
- The Birds
- Bride of Frankenstein
- Abbott and Costello’s Buck Privates
- The English and Spanish language Dracula versions filmed in 1931
- Frankenstein
- Jaws / E.T.
- Out of Africa
- Pillow Talk
- Schindler’s List
- The Sting
- To Kill a Mockingbird
‘˜Western Front,’ ‘˜Jaws,’ ‘˜Out Of Africa’ and ‘˜To Kill A Mockingbird’ are at this point the only confirmed Blu-ray releases, but with films like Frankenstein and The Birds on this list, one would have to imagine we’ll be getting most, if not all, of these. Also, the studio has hinted at the fact that this may be the start of a program lasting far longer than just their 100 year anniversary. Here’s to hoping that’s not just some hot air, and we get many, many more restorations from this iconic studio.
