Cate Blanchett Beats Out Greta Gerwig For Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young

While Greta Gerwig may in fact be a beloved thespian (she’s one of this writer’s favorite actresses, that’s for sure), it’s hard to argue about being beaten for a new role, when the person taking her place is this talented.

Anne Thompson recently spoke with mega-producer Scott Rudin, who revealed that despite having worked with director Noah Baumbach previously, Gerwig was not going to be joining the director’s next film, While We’re Young. Instead however, Cate Blanchett (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) will be the one taking the lead of his upcoming relationship film, alongside Ben Stiller and James Franco.

When the project was first announced, offers were sent out to both Gerwig and Blanchett, allegedly, and now it is clear that the latter won out.   We don’t have many details surrounding the film, but what we do know is that it will follow ‘a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple, who inspires an uptight documentarian and his wife to loosen up ‘“ with comedic consequences.’ Count me in.

Now, while I was not quite a fan of Baumbach’s last film, Greenberg, I do adore films like Kicking & Screaming and The Squid And The Whale. This film may seem really familiar for the filmmaker, but one must also wonder just what the filmmaker’s recent breakup with his former partner, Jennifer Jason Leigh, will play into the final product.   It seems like a premise right up his alley, but hey, if it isn’t broke, why fix it?
