While its official release date is set for April 23rd, Criterion is working with one of their most beloved retailers, Barnes And Noble, to bring customers a special, early look at a much anticipated Blu-ray upgrade.
B&N has announced that they are now offering up Criterion’s new Blu-ray of Laurence Olivier’s classic Shakespeare adaptation, Richard III a whole three weeks early.
The disc comes with a new 4k transfer overseen by The Film Foundation, a commentary featuring playwright Russell Lees and John Wilders, interviews and behind the scenes photos, a 12-minute trailer and a restoration demonstration with Film Foundation head Martin Scorsese.
I myself love this film, so I definitely plan on picking this disc up as soon as possible, but it is interesting to see what Criterion is doing here. Reviews for the disc haven’t even begun to pop up yet, but with Criterion doing this, it makes one wonder what’s coming down the line. Could we see the company do this once a month? Maybe once a quarter? Or is this something that only could work for a Blu-ray upgrade?
Who cares though? We are getting the chance to get our hands on a much anticipated Criterion release three weeks in advance. Get your copy HERE.
