If Criterion and Janus Films were looking to ring in 2013 with a bang, they sure as Hell got the job done.
On the eve of New Year’s Eve, it has been revealed (by some rather hawk-eyed classic film nerds) that, according to Harold Lloyd’s official website, Janus Films is currently handling theatrical bookings for the iconic comedian’s filmography.
That’s right, Janus Films is now touring the films of Harold Lloyd, including classics like Safety Last and Girl Shy. Much like their Chaplin run, this has had the internet on fire over the past handful of hours, and while it’s still very early in the game, people are already wondering what Criterion will pump out first from this legendary collection of films.
Personally, you can’t help but think that the most sought after picture here is Safety Last. Lloyd’s crowning achievement, it’s one of the all-time great silent comedies, and much like Modern Times was to Chaplin’s canon, is the only way a company can start a string of releases from this man’s oeuvre. I also, personally, adore Girl Shy and even Grandma’s Boy, but honestly, while Keaton and Chaplin get the love and attention, Lloyd has always been a name I’ve had a deep admiration for.
Again, it’s still early in the game here, but at this point, who knows? Maybe an Eclipse box set is in the works? That seems like the likeliest way we’ll, at first, see rewards from this, but a Jean Vigo-esque box set could very well be in the works.
