Jessica Chastain Confirmed For Liv Ullmann’s Miss Julie As More Join The Cast

I love it when a plan comes together.

As hinted at earlier this month (with a hat tip to the original scoopers, The Playlist) actress and Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain has been confirmed to star in the upcoming Liv Ullmann-directed adaptation of the beloved play, Miss Julie.

The actress is joined by Colin Farrell in the picture, which follows the story of a woman “as she attempts to escape the stodginess of social mores at a Swedish count’s estate in the summer of 1874.” The last time we saw an adaptation of the play was helmed by Mike Figgis back in 1999, but there is actually even a Criterion-approved adaptation.

Directed by Alf Sjoberg, the film was released in 1951, and is currently available to buy from Criterion, or even stream on Hulu Plus. I haven’t seen the picture, or the play, but what I do know is that Ullmann is a great artist, and Chastain is one of today’s most exciting actresses. I can’t wait to see what she gains from Ullmann’s direction, and just how superb this film will likely be.

Here’s a trailer for Ullmann’s last directorial effort, Faithless:
