If an arthouse director has seen a jump from indie darling into the list of hotly sought after directors, it has been Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn. The mentioned film has become something of a cult hit, even raking in fans previously unaware of his work, aka those simply attracted to the film for star Ryan Gosling. And now, the pair are back with what looks like an equally entertaining and brooding bit of cinema.
The teaser trailer for their next film, Only God Forgives, has debuted over at Yahoo, and it’s a stunner.
Light on plot, the trailer only hints at the film’s premise, but what it does hint at is aesthetic. Seemingly rooted heavily in the style that Refn really started to mine in his last film (even though there were definite hints at this coming in previous works, primarily films like Valhalla Rising), which Refn has admitted as much in interviews leading up to this film. There are things ranging from static shots of co-star Kristin Scott-Thomas smoking or a startlingly beautiful shot in a red hallway, that make one think that this may be one of this year’s more intriguing pictures. I was a little cold on Drive, but this definitely looks like a superb continuation of that aesthetic.
Here’s the synopsis:
A Bangkok police lieutenant and a gangster settle their differences in a Thai-boxing match.
