Todd Field Eyes Beautiful Ruins As Next Project

toddfieldframed

Now seven years since the director’s last feature film, Little Children, it finally appears as though director Todd Field has found his next directorial effort.

The director has signed on to helm a project entitled Beautiful Ruins, which will find Jess Walter and Field writing the film’s screenplay. Walter wrote the novel from which the film will be based, and while no actors have been attached, this definitely sounds like one hell of a project.

The film will follow the story of three characters whose “orbit around one another is set in motion by an incident involving the international jet-set center, Rome, in the throws of La Dolce Vita madness during the shooting of Cleopatra, and continues for decades.”

Widely received as a great novel, the film sounds like it has the makings of one of the more interesting adaptations currently in production. As a huge fan of Field’s work, particularly the massively underrated Little Children, which is one of the better American dramas of the last handful of years. Or at least one of the most unsung. Hopefully this one comes around sooner rather than later.
