Watch Steven Soderbergh’s Full Speech From The San Francisco International Film Festival

He may very well be on his way out as a director, but if Steven Soderbergh is really nearing the end of his directorial career, he’s not going out quietly.

The filmmaker recently spoke at this year’s San Francisco International Film Festival, and with his latest film, Behind The Candelabra nearing a debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, he is going out with a bang.

During his speech, Soderbergh discussed everything from his sadness in the lack of appreciation monetarily for his film Side Effects to the difference between movies and “cinema,” in what is a must watch/listen for any cinephile.

The most interesting idea? Well, while his ideas about the future of the studio system may be making the most waves, it’s his idea behind what should be found as a possible remake that really is intriguing. Seemingly found entirely out of common sense, the auteur posits that studios should be looking into their back catalog for projects that had great ideas, but failed, to ultimately remake. I completely and utterly agree with this point, and find this entire conversation to be absolutely thrilling. Really, if you are a fan of film, this is a must watch.
