Over the past few weeks, things have been heating up in the video rental wars, with Netflix and Blockbuster stealing a lot of the headlines.

Well, Redbox isn’t set to be outdone.

According to Home Media Magazine, Redbox is nearly a million Facebook “friends” in to its recent promotional outing. The new contest entailed giving each new “friend” on their Facebook page, a free one night rental.

The company has received more than 1,000,000 new “friends” during the past two weeks alone, and are staying strong.

Personally, I don’t know how to really take this news. Part of me knows that this is helping the company, as it introduces them to a wider audience now, but also, I can’t help but think that a ton of people are doing it only for the free rental. Maybe that’s just the part of me that wants to hate the company for what they stand for, but I do really think that this isn’t a statistic that holds much weight. Unless these are repeat users, then this is just a company shelling out free product to gain consumer awareness.

    Why do you hate REDBOX?

I 'liked' their FB page for the free promo and to keep up with their news updates. Well the 'free' promo didn't work and it didn't work for the 500+ ppl that commented on their FB page. Some said they were able to call RB to get another promo code, but IMO, it's BS that I should have to take more of my time to get a free DVD.

I 'unliked' their FB page and it's unlikely I'll ever rent from them again.
