International DVD And Blu-ray Sales Dropping

With International markets seeming to do quite better than domestic markets when it comes to cinema, it appears as though that may not be the case for DVD and Blu-ray.

According to The Wrap, sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs dropped 3% in 2009, and are looking to fall 20% by the end of 2014, or a slide of about $14.5 million. This comes against cartoonishly high increases in domestic DVD and Blu-ray sales, particularly Blu-rays which saw an increase of 70% last year.

Analysts believe that this is simply spawned from the ever weakening global market, and the continual pricing of Blu-ray releases at a rather high premium in overseas markets. Personally, that seems like a pretty heads on prognostication of just what is plaguing foreign markets.

However, I can’t help but think that things like online streaming happen to play into DVD sales a little bit. I know for a fact that I personally have skipped out on buying/renting films that I knew where online via something like Netflix, so while I can’t really say anything about foreign sales, I do think access to media can sort of span the globe.

However, I really don’t think that it’s much more than the ever growing financial crisis that is slowly spanning the planet that we call Earth.

  • I notice in my NETFLIX queue that now it says for movies BLU RAY ending on a certain date the same way they have for streaming movies, also I notice all the extras for BLU RAYS has been disappearing, you don't even get scene selection anymore and you have to watch like 20 minutes worth of Trailers
