Hazy Future For Linklater’s Dazed And Confused Sequel

Within the world of film, some projects get made, and others get lost to history, never getting their much deserved time in front of the camera. It looks like Richard Linklater may be getting a film added to that latter list.

According to The Playlist, not only is Linklater’s sequel to his beloved classic, and Criterion staple, Dazed & Confused ‘just sitting there,’ but lost amongst the recent collapse of Miramax, his once next film, Liar’s A-E, has been tossed away. ‘The Miramax undertow washed that one away,’ he told the outlet. The film was set to follow a woman who finds objects left by her ex-boyfriend, while she makes the cross country trek to President Obama’s inauguration. While the premise didn’t really get me too excited, the screenplay was a top shelf piece of writing that was what we loved about previous Linklater films.

Even more upsetting? The Dazed & Confused sequel can get made, but it isn’t. Linklater told the outlet that ‘it’s just sitting there. I even have it financed, I just have to get a distributor that would do it or would give me enough to make it.’ Will someone just pick this damn thing up already? This is definitely a film that I would love to see made, and right now is as good a time as ever.

However, the filmmaker does have something on the slate. Linklater reportedly has a Fargo style true crime story on the docket that while not the project that I would have liked to have seen him do, does sound interesting. The film is described as a Fargo in East Texas, which is definitely a logline that I’m digging. That said, I hope that we see his Dazed sequel sooner, rather than later, as that is definitely the film I’m really waiting to see.
