Jean-Luc Godard Not Attending The Governors Awards For Honorary Oscar

Despite getting pleas to stop making films from fellow writers of mine on this very site, director Jean-Luc Godard is not only still my favorite filmmaker of all time, but one that is about to receive an honorary Oscar from the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

However, he won’t be there to accept it.

According to Deadline, the director will not be attending this year’s Governors Awards, where he will be receiving his award, along with Francis Ford Coppola, Eli Wallach, and silent film historian Kevin Brownlow.

Personally, while the director’s latest works have admittedly been rather underwhelming, the fact that this show will not be televised, and that it’s taken the Academy this long to give this legend an award makes me completely alright with the fact he’s skipping on the ceremony.   Sure, it would be really classy of him to attend, and with reviews of his lasts film, Film Socialisme, coming out as negative as they are, it may prove good for his legacy, but at this point, it doesn’t affect me either way.

That said, the event will take place on November 13, for those interested.
