“Three Reasons” Meets “For Criterion Consideration” In New Fan Series

When we brought up the notion that our readers and listeners might find it entertaining to create their own Three Reasons videos, I didn’t think I’d get something this heartfelt and original. As we all know, Criterion has begun producing Three Reasons videos for upcoming titles, and have recently released their latest for Brian De Palma’s Blow Out. We’ve presented the idea that our readers should go back into the catalog, and create Three Reasons videos for their favorite titles, but today I was sent some videos for films that aren’t even in the Collection.

Below I’m embedding three videos from our reader, Robert Nishimura (of Primolandia Productions). He has taken upon himself to take the “Fake Criterion Cover” to the next level, by producing Three Reasons videos for Tony Gatlif’s Latcho Drom, Kô Nakahira’s Only On Mondays, and Nagisa Ôshima’s Band Of Ninja. These are three films that I was unfamiliar with, but after watching Robert’s videos, I cannot wait to see more of them.

Three Reasons: Latcho Drom from For Criterion Consideration on Vimeo.

Three Reasons: Yuka on Mondays from For Criterion Consideration on Vimeo.

Three Reasons: Manual of Ninja Arts from For Criterion Consideration on Vimeo.

What makes these videos extra special, is that at the end of each clip, you get a proposed cover art for each potential Criterion title.

What do you think of Robert’s Three Reasons / For Criterion Condieration mash-up project? Which films should he tackle next? As I’ve stated before, we are very interested in hosting a contest for these films, but are not currently. As soon as we finalize the rules and prizes, you all will know about it. If you’re thinking of creating your own video, you’ll want to use the “gotham” family of fonts for the text on the screen.

  • Those were terrific, especially the spot for Yuka on Mondays (which I must. see. now.). I can see each of these in the Criterion Collection. But who is going to give Robert the news that ‘renowned’ is misspelled in his Band of Ninja video?

  • Wow, I’m very impressed with Robert’s work here! Thank you for sharing your talent and bringing these films to our attention. I have to figure Criterion’s talent scouts will take notice of this. The bar has been raised for any future 3 Reasons video contest!
