Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity Gets A Release Date

If there has been one film waiting in the wings that has had the film world truly excited, it’s the next film from Alfonso Cuaron.   Entitled Gravity, the film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, and since it has begun filming back in June, news surrounding the project has been rather light.   That is, until today.

The film is now slated to hit theaters on November 21, 2012, thanks to WB.   Penned by Cuaron, his son Jonas and director Rodrigo Garcia, the film is best described as Cuaron’s take on the world of sci-fi action films.   Featuring his patented long takes, the script also is rumored to have quite a few beats of silence, something that Cuaron is the king of.

Narrative wise, the film follows a pair of astronauts who, following the deaths of the rest of their crew members, with the focus being on the woman, Bullock’s character, and her journey to get home to her family.   Those who have read the script (such as The Playlist) have proclaimed that the film is primarily a one-person project, similar to something like 127 Hours, making this definitely something to keep an eye on.   I’m a huge fan of Cuaron, and hopefully this project can live up to the immense hype.

Cuaron’s Y Tu Mama Tambien has been long rumored to get the Criterion treatment, and it seems unlikely that he’ll have time to oversee the production of the disc with this film in the works. While Criterion teased at the Y Tu Mama Tambien release in this year’s Wacky New Years drawing, we only have a couple of months left in 2011 in which they could release it.
