‘The Last Picture Show’ Gets A New Run On The Big Screen; Cast To Reunite With A Live Streamed Panel

With the release of Criterion’s BBS box set came the release of one of the most beloved films from the 1970s on Blu-ray and DVD, The Last Picture Show.   And now, with the help of Sony and the Academy Film Archive, comes the film’s newly restored, ‘Definitive Director’s Cut,’ and its first theatrical issue.

Set to premiere at the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences, the print will show on Thursday at 7:30pm, and while tickets are sold out, the film’s Q/A session will be streamed live at 9:45pm PT HERE.

As a huge fan of the film, I’m not only enticed by the reveal of this new print, but what exactly has changed. Director Peter Bogdanovich created a director’s cut back in the 90s restoring a few shots and adding seven minutes to the feature, and one would imagine that this is that cut, just digitally restored.   The film is clocking in, according to the AMPAS site, at 126 minutes, so it does appear to be the lengthier cut, and is also the same cut that the Criterion Collection had used for their release.   Personally, I’d love to see the film get its own stand alone Criterion release, but in HD, this sucker looks wonderful as is.   I will say this though.   One can only imagine what it looks like on the big screen.
