Fantastic Fest, the greatest genre film festival in the states, will finally be kicking off their week and half of events on Thursday. Today, they announced something particularly close to my own heart, something that I would almost fly out to Austin for it alone.
It has been officially announced that the Criterion Collection will be sponsoring the infamous karaoke party, and will be tying it into last year’s epic Antichrist “Chaos Reigns” screening. Now that Criterion will be releasing Antichrist this November, the karaoke party will give everyone who got a Chaos Reigns shirt last year, the opportunity to break it out of the closet, and get up on the microphone for the chance to win some Criterion swag.
They’re also tying in the October release of House (Hausu), complete with the infamous decals that we gave out at Comic Con, and have sent to a few lucky readers. No word yet on a House screening at Fantastic Fest this year, but who knows what might come along, as there are still plenty of announcements this week to be made.
Criterion and Fantastic Fest will also be promoting the December release of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cronos. With Guillermo making the tour rounds for Julia’s Eyes, and his upcoming sequel to the Strain, The Fall, attendees might be able to rub elbows with Del Toro himself. I wouldn’t be too surprised to learn that Julia’s Eyes might be making a surprise screening, as they have managed to put together an absolutely amazing genre line-up this year.
The karaoke party will be happening this Saturday, September 25th, at 11pm at the Highball (where the Fantastic Arcade events will be happening). They can only fit 300 people into this spot, so I’d imagine you should get there EARLY, because you will not want to miss out on the events. I’ve even heard that they’ll be giving away Criterion DVDs and Blu-rays, as well as the opportunity to win copies of House, Antichrist, and Cronos, when they’re released.

Karaoke has become a staple of Fantastic Fest, and this is the party that unhinges the barn doors of insanity. Chaos will truly reign in celebration of Criterion’s upcoming releases of Fantastic Fest hits HAUSU and ANTICHRIST, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s CRONOS.
